Lake Baikal

The largest lake in the world! Flat tires and vomit...

View Post PhD Adventure on yravussi1's travel map.

Early wake up, quick breakfast, 25 min jaunt to bus station. 15 people in small minivan zooming towards lake Baikal.
Highlights (for some of us): flat tire right at the time of crossing another small minivan containing an unflat one; you child throws up on neighbors while sleeping - twice - tan russian downs at least 6 beers in <1/2 hours time and chain smokes in the back.
Ironically, I had previously joked with my neighbor (the one who got thrown up on - tall Brazilian from Sao Paolo) of the likelihood that the drunk man in back would throw up on his girlfriend who was sitting right next to Mr Beer. With the Brazilian guy receiving the gastric juices, fate must have been playing with normal fate! We cross by ferry onto Olkhon Island and finally, after 5.5 hours, arrive next to a deep blue lake cut out of ragged mountains. We eat, watch two local women dance, and retreat to our huge 4 bed wooden cabana with view of the lake that we get all to ourselves... coming during low season is great. Dinner, laundry in a big red plastic bucket, a few pics of the sunset - we are finally out of the big cities and in Siberia, somewhat.
